Dry Skin on the Penis
Dry skin on the penis can be very irritating, and can cause the penis to lose sensitivity as the dry skin is dead skin. Dry skin on the penis may be nothing malicious however you have to be aware of the possibility that it may be a yeast infection or another STD. If you believe there is a possibility you have become infected with an STD – even if this is a hard realisation to come to as it may be – you must be sensible and practical, and visit your G.P. for a diagnosis. It is better to be safe than sorry.
Having dry skin on the penis doesn't necessarily mean you have an STD or infection, in fact in most cases it is simply dry due to improper penile care. Below are some reasons why skin may have become dry, and what you can do to promote healthier skin on your penis.
Causes of dry penis skin and how to deal with it:
- Circumcision: Whilst in some medical cases circumcision is necessary, removing a healthy foreskin is a big mistake. The foreskin is a protective barrier for the penis. It keeps germs away and helps to keep the penis moist, without it the penis is more susceptible to becoming dry or infected. People whom have been circumcised need to ensure they keep their penis clean and moist in other ways, by applying moisturiser regularly and following our other tips.
- Usage of some soaps and hot water during bathing is a bit of a lethal combination as far as healthy skin goes, and healthy skin on the penis is no exception. Bath using lukewarm water and don't use soap on the penis. Ensure you moisturise your penis regularly, particularly after bathing.
- Underwear or bed sheets which have been washed using a particularly detergent may be causing or aggravating dry skin, so it may be worth trying another detergent which causes less irritation.
- Eat a balanced diet full of sulphur rich foods such as onions and garlic, and plenty of Vitamin A, B and C for healthy skin growth and maintenance.
