Dry Skin Therapy

Dry skin is a problem any person can suffer from, and there are numerous causes of dry skin. For the most part, dry skin is very treatable in a number of different ways, and upon developing dry skin it is important a person partakes in some form of dry skin therapy to repair and rejuvenate their skin.

Skin may become dry for a number of reasons:

  • Underlying ailments such as diabetes, or skin conditions such as eczema. Under-active thyroid glands also cause dry skin.
  • Lack of sebum (natural skin oil) production.
  • Environmental factors, cold, wind, rain, low humidity.
  • Lack of Vitamin A, B and C for healthy skin.
  • Excessive washing or detrimental washing practices.
  • No use of moisturiser.

Most of all, besides underlying problems which have to be tackled in other ways also, dry skin is caused by a lack of knowledge about skin care in general. Like any other part of the body, the skin is a living breathing organ and requires nourishing and treating, without such it will deteriorate. As the skin is an external organism, it secretes a protective oil of its own called sebum. If a person washes too often, particularly using harsh soap and hot water, this can wash away the protective sebum leaving the skin exposed to the elements. By washing a maximum of once a day using a good moisturising soap such as Olay or Dove, and using lukewarm water, you're skin will be less dry. Use a moisturiser also, particularly after bathing or shaving. This helps to nourish and protect the skin. Take Vitamin A supplements to help promote sebum production and healthy skin growth. One final tip is to use a humidifier during the winter months. Central heating can dry the skin, and by using a humidifier you stop this from happening so much.
