Xerosis

Xerosis, perhaps better known as ‘dry skin' is a common problem among people of any age. Whilst the skin is a resilient organ – it has to be – from time to time, if we don't pay attention to treating our skin correctly in various ways, it can become worn, dry, dull, flaky, cracked and sore. Nobody likes having bad skin, but unless certain things are done to restore our skin back to health and maintain it, skin problems will continue to be a recurring issue.

Skin care is a constant treatment, and there are three main things to consider when caring for the skin, each will be listed below with explanations of what role each plays.

Skin care is a constant treatment which consists of three main things. Each will be detailed below with an explanation of the role it plays in keeping skin healthy and staving off Xerosis:

  1. Good bathing practice: Believe it or not, there is a right way and a wrong way to bathe – that is, if you want your skin to be at its best. Bathing with hot water and the wrong soap, and using a scrubbing instrument such as a loafer or flannel can be a very detrimental bathing practice. Hot water and soap can make the skins sebum oil (the skins natural protective oil) become soluble, whilst the loafer or flannel wipes it off. Then when it comes to drying, rubbing yourself dry with a towel will wipe yet more sebum away. The best bathing practice for your skin is to use lukewarm water with a good moisturising soap such as Dove or Olay, and to avoid using loafers of flannels. When you are drying yourself, do so by patting yourself dry, not rubbing.
  2. Diet: Diet is an essential and seriously overlooked factor in having good skin. The skin, like any other body part, needs certain nutrients and vitamins to be at its best. Having a proper balanced diet which contains sulphur, as well as plenty of Vitamin A, B and C will really make your skin healthier.
  3. Moisturise: Your skin needs added help and protection from time to time, especially as a person ages. By moisturising regularly, particularly after bathing or shaving, you ensure your skin isn't been left vulnerable to damage.
